How Many Animals Are Used for Testing in your State?

This map shows the staggering amount of animals used in testing by state in the U.S.. The darker and more intense the color, the more animals used by facilities in that state.

This map was created using data from the United States Department of Agriculture’s 2014 Annual Report on Animal Usage. ThEvery USDA-register research facility is required by the Animal Welfare Act to submit their use of covered animals to this report. The animal subjects are categorized by the type of testing that they undergo:

• With Pain, With Drugs means that the animal was used in research that produced pain and was given pain relieving drugs.
• With Pain, No Drugs means that the animal was used in research that produced pain for the animal, yet no pain drugs were given.
• No Pain, No Drugs means that the animal was used in research but no perceived pain was involved and pain drugs where not administered.
• Animal Held Facility, Not Used means that the animal was held in a research facility but not yet experimented on that year.
